Notified participants of WikiProject Performing arts. Hello everyone! This month (July 2018), we are hosting a quite crucial community consultation on Wikimedia Commons: we are listing the Wikidata properties that media files on Commons will need (including ones that might not exist yet, and might need to be created for this purpose). The consultation runs at least till the end of July, maybe longer.

Please consider to take a look and give input. It would be very nice to have some ideas on how to properly describe media files (audio, images, video) that document performing arts events. Thanks! SandraF (WMF) (talk) 11:53, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Import data about greek stage productions[edit]

Hello,

in the limits of my double master studies -in information science and theater history- I have decided to explore all these capabilities that your work here offers. I would like to ask if I can use your ontology / schema to create a dataset for greek stage productions from 1950 until today in Wikidata? I have already make some imports and I ask for your feedback. Furthermore, I would like to ask if I can somehow to help in your effort?

Thank you for your time Katikei

@Katikei: Welcome to our project! Yes, you are of course more than welcome to join our efforts. I have had a look at some of your edits so far. Below some questions/comments:
  • If you create new items, it would be great if you could add an English label and/or description if possible (in addition to the ones in the local language). Furthermore, it would be helpful if you would indicate a reference to the source of your data whenever possible.
  • I was wondering whether it was necessary to create a separate sub-class "Greek Theater Season" Greek Theater Season (Q59613404). Probably this is useful, but it would be good if you could indicate the difference/peculiarity with regard to European Theater Season (beginning / end) in the description.
  • Greek Theater Season 2017/2018 (Q60704278): start time / end time do not look right.
If you have any concrete questions or want me to look at a particular item, let me know.
Are you planning any ingests from existing data sources? If yes, which ones? - It might be helpful if you could share your plans. In this way we could guide you through the ingestion process. There is also work to be done regarding the ingest of character roles for various types of plays (operas, musicals, theatre plays). - This would be a job for someone with software programming skills and involves data scraping from Wikipedia. Let me know about your plans, your timeline and your availability, so we can see how best to cooperate. You can contact me here on-wiki or by email: beat.estermann(at)bfh.ch
--Beat Estermann (talk) 10:10, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response.

You are right, I have to add English label and/or description. My reference sources of my data are theatrical playbills, newspaper articles and for the moment I don't know how to make a citation to them in Wikidata. When I use a website from a theater company I'm trying to citation the URL.

I need more time to think about "sub-class "Greek Theater Season" Ελληνική Θεατρική Περίοδος (Q59613404)" issue, .....but I think you are right too.

My basic goal is to to create a dataset about greek stage productions, using semantic web tools. I have already create a personal database based on theatrical playbills, newspapers and websites. For the ingestion process I make some experiments with OpenRefine tool. All the proccess is more complicate than I was thinking about before I start. The data about greek actors, directors, plays, theaters are too poor, and if I want to be honest I was expect to find in Wikidata, more things about global theatrical characters and their conection with the plays.

I have a deadline until Feb. 20 to write an assignment about the process to create a theater wiki based on semantic web tools -special on Wikidata. After this I will be available (and happy) to help more specific with WikiProject Performing Arts.

Thank you for your work in Wikidata Katikei (talk) 08:31, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Katikei, I know what you are talking about! ;-) So yes, please email me after the 20 February, so that we can discuss what would be the most reasonable next steps. In the meanwhile, I'm trying to see whether we can get a hold of the production database of the Greek National Theatre (a database was created a few years ago in the course of a research project). -- Cheers, Beat Estermann (talk) 08:59, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

International Knowledge Base for the Performing Arts[edit]

Over the past years, I have had the chance to work with various segments of the performing arts value network, involving production and presenting companies, archival institutions, educational and research institutions, and the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia. As a result, a concept for an International Knowledge Base for the Performing Arts based on linked data technology has been developed that integrates the perspectives of both the stakeholders of the primary value network and the stakeholders in the fields of heritage, research, and education.

Please have a look and add your comments in the Google Doc.

Wikimedia Foundation Project Grant: Modelling and Populating Performing Arts Data in Wikidata[edit]

Further to the work that we undertook with Beat_Estermann as part of the Linked Digital Future initiative, the Canadian Arts Presenting Association (CAPACOA) is now proposing to undertake modelling and population activities in Wikidata. To this effect, we submitted a project grant application to the Wikimedia Foundation. All members of this performing arts community (and anyone else interest in performing arts industry data) are invited to read and comment the project. We look forward to reading your input.

In order to broaden the outreach about this project grant, I also want to ask this community for the authorization (and possibly for help) to post a banner on the WikiProject home page.

Denoting the domain of awards and prizes[edit]

I am wondering which property should be used to denote the domain of awards and prizes in Wikidata. In Governor General's Performing Arts Award (Q3405815), the performing arts domain for the award is denoted with field of work (P101). However, the description for field of work (P101) is: "specialization of a person or organization". This description does therefore not seem to apply to awards. At the same time, the subject type constraint (Q21503250) does include award (Q618779) (as well as museum (Q33506)). Is field of work (P101), then, the right property to denote the domain of an award? --Fjjulien (talk) 14:40, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fjjulien: interested in (P2650)Eihel (talk) 05:54, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Or applies to part (P518), but as qualifier, @Fjjulien:. —Eihel (talk) 06:51, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Eihel: I am not convinced interested in (P2650) presents any advantage over field of work (P101). Both are properties for persons and organizations. And interested in (P2650) constraints does not allow its use on award items. Unless a more specific property is found, we may have to keep using field of work (P101). --Fjjulien (talk) 02:35, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Fjjulien Hello, If nothing is right for you, don't take a property that may be roughly suitable, for lack of something better. Example: You are not going to take founded by (P112) because you have not found father (P22). This means that the property may not exist (I don't know all the properties). To do this, please suggest a property that might be suitable with an explanation or even a link to this discussion. It happens under Wikidata:Property proposal. Best regards. —Eihel (talk) 03:05, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Fjjulien Hello I am wondering where you ended up with this? I am looking at the performing arts awards in New Zealand at the moment. It strikes me that another way to model the area of the award is through P31. This is already how some awards are modelled. For instance, there is currently a class of award called science award (Q11448906), which is a subclass of award. There is another for music award (Q1364556) and theatre award (Q15229229). Perhaps what we really need is a subclass of award called performing arts award, and make music, dance, theatre, opera awards as subclasses under this? From my perspective it would be easier then to find all the performing arts awards that apply to a particular country or whatever. What do you think? DrThneed (talk) 01:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello DrThneed Hello I never had the time to look through CIDOC-CRM and other ontologies for the right property to implement in Wikidata. I did find facet of (P1269), but it would not be a better property than field of work (P101). In the absence of a better solution, I chose not to delete someone else's statement. This being said, your proposed solution is a very good one. I suggest you go ahead and implement it. Once it's implemented, let me know and I will amend all Canadian performing arts awards accordingly. Fjjulien (talk) 20:00, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
thanks @Fjjulien:, I'll wait a bit in case anyone else comments or suggestions, and I'll let you know if/when I go ahead.DrThneed (talk) 21:30, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Fjjulien Hello Alright, I've kept it simple and just created performing arts award performing arts award (Q105593003) as a subclass of award. I will go through and reclassify relevant New Zealand awards, obviously others can use as they see fit. Let me know if you see any issue with doing it this way. DrThneed (talk) 01:22, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DrThneed: Excellent. I did the same with Canadian performing arts awards. Fjjulien (talk) 21:45, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Eihel, @DrThneed: I finally decided to propose a property for "field of this award". As my colleagues and I were working on modelling strategies for performing arts award programs, we realized such a property could meet many needs both as a main statement and as a qualifier. Please read and comment the property proposal. Notified participants of WikiProject Performing arts Fjjulien (talk) 16:18, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have developed a project proposal to improve content of performing arts in Aotearoa New Zealand. I am applying for a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.

The starting point of the project is Wikidata and there is interest in the New Zealand editing community to improve their knowledge of Wikidata in this subject area. I have a question about how to connect the learning across both projects so they inform each other. I am quite new to the area of running a WikiProject.

I invite members of this performing arts community for feedback and support. Advice on ways to improve this project is welcome.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Performing_Arts_Aotearoa_-_Wiki_Project

Ways to increase the outreach would also be appreciated.

Pakoire (talk) 21:46, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am very pleased to announce that this project grant was successful. The four month Performing Arts Aotearoa WikiProject starts today with the focus on creating quality content on New Zealand performing arts on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. I invite you to add yourself as a participant on the project page where you will get regular updates and be able to join in the discussion. Please feel free to reach out to me via the project talk page with any feedback.
Pakoire (talk) 22:58, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The project page is on my user account and will be moved once the project completes - the project setup will expand as the project expands.

The Canadian Association for the Performing Arts (CAPACOA) and Conseil québécois du théâtre are proposing a second Wikimedia Foundation project grant to build a critical mass of performing arts items in Wikidata, and to assist with the coordination and action items from the Linked Open Data Ecosystem for the Performing Arts community. Please review, comment and endorse the proposal. --Fjjulien (talk) 22:17, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This project grant was unfortunately not selected. We nonetheless hope to undertake some of the proposed activities, although at a smaller scale. Among other things, we will continue to hold quarterly meetings of the LODEPA Wikipedia/Wikidata Working Group (LODEPA stands for "Linked Open Data Ecosystem for the Performing Arts"). Notified participants of WikiProject Performing arts Hello performing arts community,

I am preparing a proposal for the Wikimedia Foundation Community Fund (which replaces the former project grants program). The proposal is provisionally titled "Wikidata and the Linked Open Data Ecosystem for the Performing Arts". It includes several activities building up on the previous project grant: batch uploads, a datathon, data-consuming prototypes and coordination of the LODEPA Wikipedia/Wikidata Working Group. Proposal are now longer submitted on the meta wiki, but rather via an online platform (hence the Doc draft proposal). I believe there will an opportunity for the community to provide input after submission, but I encourage comments directly in the draft Google Doc. Hello everyone! As you may know, the SAPA Foundation, Swiss Archive of the Performing Arts (Q50920401) is committed to releasing the data they maintain under a free licence. They want to upload the content of the performing-arts.ch (Q104173640) database to Wikidata. The import project has been already started by Baptiste Coulon (SAPA bdc, who made various tests to match their existing database and Wikidata. Nicolas Vigneron (VIGNERON en résidence) and I (Auregann) have been commissioned by Wikimedia CH (Q15279140) to continue this project and import a first batch of 14,000 productions. As part of this project, we will analyse the existing data (that is already accessible from a SPARQL endpoint), prepare its modelling in Wikidata, import and reconcile this data in OpenRefine.

We created the dedicated project page Wikidata:WikiProject Performing arts/Use cases/Swiss/Lot 2023-1 to document the project and the related talk page to discuss specifics aspects of the import. We started studying the existing data and the previous import experiments from Baptiste.

In order to test the data model and the import process, Nicolas imported a first set of productions, that you can find in this query. We would love to have your feedback on the way we modelled the existing data in these items:

  • Is the use of properties aligned with the good practices of the WikiProject Performing Arts?
  • Do you see anything missing, or anything that should be improved?
  • Is there anything that should prevent us from going on with the rest of the batch?

Nicolas prepared the next steps of the import based on this test, if there’s no blocker, he will continue with the import around mid-January.

Many thanks in advance for your feedback. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us here or on the project's talk page.

Fjjulien (talk) 02:36, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fjjulien (talk) 03:04, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auregann@Fjjulien@VIGNERON Créer un sous-Wikiprojet me semble une très bonne idée dans ce cas, car c'est plus spécifique pout utiliser avec maintained by WikiProject (P6104). Beireke1 (talk) 09:26, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like suggestions about a problem of describing puppets. In WD, it’s easy to add puppets to a show, and a cast member is good for saying who manipulates puppets, but I would like suggestions on how to match the cast member to the puppet it manipulates. I guess maybe the solution would be a new property, maybe something general like:

English: controlling
Français : manipulant

Example of a puppet show: The Star Keeper (Q99980547). Regards, Antoine2711 (talk) 05:43, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Antoine2711The first way I think of when I would be modeling this is to use the qualifier performer (P175) on the characters (P674) statements. It's somehow a duplication of data, because the values for this qualifier will probably be the names that you already have under cast member (P161), but that's the best I can think of for now. It would be good to hear other opinions too though. Beireke1 (talk) 09:50, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Antoine2711 I looked at current uses of performer (P175) as a qualifier. I found a somehow similar use, but then on a Wikidata item of a character: Nala (Q109509493) and Papi (Q14915762). Another way to modeling the data could be to put the names of the puppets in qualifiers of the cast member (P161) statements, similar to what is done on the voice actor (P725) statements in Toy Story 2 (Q187266).
