What is the question?[edit]

@Matthew hk: If this is intended to gather support/oppose votes then the question needs to be clear. Currently there is a "summary" line at the top that states "should we used the translation of the foreign language proper noun as (the primary) English wiki item label". This is rather ambiguous - what is "the translation"? Also there is no reason English should be special here on Wikidata. I propose we modify the question to be voted on (if we want votes) as follows:

  • For an item where there is no official name in a language, should the primary label be:
(A) The most commonly used name in third-party references (if any)
(B) The native-language name (possibly transcribed if the native language uses a different writing system)
(C) A literal translation of the meaning of the native-language name
(D) Some other choice

Clearly (A) is the current recommendation in Help:Label, but maybe we need a fallback? ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:35, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ArthurPSmith, The problem is Adamant1 say Help:Label has no value and he just don't border to follow it and prevent people to fix Q3633695. It is that simple and may be no need to another rfc. Matthew hk (talk) 15:34, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And i am against C. It is more useful just to fill pinyin of Chinese name of the company as English label instead of literal translation by editor themselves. That's the Library of Congress to treat Chinese name (some of the very old item they use Wade–Giles). Matthew hk (talk) 15:36, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
