Wikidata:Meta-Wiki

This is a draft about how Wikidata could support Meta.

Ambassadors[edit]

The meta community needs to be informed about the deployment and what it means for them. Please help with spreading the information. If you are willing to act as an ambassador please add your name below and link to any local discussions.

Meta:

Interlanguage links (Phase 1)[edit]

Interlanguage links from wikidata will be shown using Other projects sidebar. Other projects sidebar adds an section called "Other projects" to the sidebar, where links to other wikimedia projects are shown.

Additionaly, meta may choose to use the same interlanguage functionality as Wikimedia Commons. Commons has direct interwiki links via Wikidata to wikipedias. That option is one-directional, from commons to wikipedia.

Main namespace[edit]

Contains cross-wiki content. Some of the pages here might benifit from being linked to items, such as chapter pages and policy pages. Main namespace pages would link to new items. Content in those items could be used by meta namespaces on other projects, by getting data from arbitary pages.

Meta[edit]

Includes meta-specific content. Same contraints as other project namespaces. Pages within this namespace should use existing items, connected to pages in the project namespaces on other projects.

Template / Help / Category[edit]

Same namespaces as on other WMF projects. Pages within those namespaces should use existing items connected to the corresponding namespaces in wikipedia, wikisource, etc.

Grants[edit]

Used by grant projects, such as the Individual Engagement Grant project. Grant namespace pages would link to new items. Content in those items could be used by meta namespaces on other projects, by getting data from arbitary pages.

Research[edit]

A repository on research about Wikimedia projects. Research namespace pages would link to new items. Content in those items could be used by meta namespaces on other projects, by getting data from arbitrary pages.

Iberocoop[edit]

Used by the Regional Cooperation inactive for Ibero-America (Iberocoop in short). It aims to create a chapter in the Ibero-America region. Iberocoop namespace pages would link to new items. The content in those items would be particularly useful on Portuguese and Spanish wikimedia wikis.

Module[edit]

Namespace for Lua scripts. Should link to existing items with links to existing lua scipts, whenever possible.

Excluded namespaces[edit]

The following namespaces should not be linked with Wikidata.

  • Special pages: Excluded per Wikidata:Notability.
  • User: Excluded per Wikidata:Notability.
  • File: Excluded per Wikidata:Notability.
  • MediaWiki: Excluded per Wikidata:Notability. Contains messages for mediawiki and its extensions in addition to configurations and gadgets.
  • Schema: Namespace only used my WMF staff. Contains json code only. This namespace is used for the EventLogging extension. Restricted, for sysops only. Zero chance of interlanguage links being here.
  • Zero: Namespace only used my WMF staff. Contains json code only. This namespace is used for Wikipedia Zero. Restricted, for the "zero administrator" group only. Zero chance of interlanguage links being here.
  • CNBanner: Used by Central Notice banner, which distributes global messages whitin wikimedia. Since the content here is shown shortly after on wikimedia wikis anyway, it would be pretty pointless to link to it.
  • Translations: Excluded per Wikidata:Notability. Contains translations provided by users and maintained by the Translation extension.
  • Topic: Used for talk pages using the Flow extension, per MediaWiki.org these are permanent links of these workflows, thus excluded per Wikidata:Notability.

Statements (Phase 2)[edit]

Content from wikidata can help meta to improve internalisation of meta. Meta will utilize data from arbitary pages (depends on bugzilla:47930).

Bots[edit]

Meta allows global bots. Of the bots that have made changes on meta for the last 30 days, only one changes interwiki links. This bot is: User:タチコマ robot
