Your deletes

I see you are deleting enteries created by me. You will also be aware that they all come from the National Library of Wales' 'On-Line Biography' e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18596116. I'm a little suprised: 1. That you didn't inform me, or warn me of your intention and 2. that you are deleting notable people which have a Wikipedia entry eg Adda Fras, or did you not look for other languages? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 15:05, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

I don't see any sitelinks on the deleted items, also no statements. Only a label and a description. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:10, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Finding a match using 'Mix'n'Match' for the Dictionary of Welsh Biography takes around 6-7 minutes per item. I've done around 150. Others can fill in the details, I pair them off. Where are the rules that sitelinks (whatever they are!) and 'statements' are needed? Secondly, why I was not warned that you are deleting my edits? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 15:16, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Please see our Wikidata:Notability policy: items need at least one sitelink (you know, Wikipedia or something), or you can add referenced statements (properties!) to it. Your item didn't got both. They can also fulfill a structural need, but there weren't any incoming links on this item. I'll make a notification template for these kind of deletions, but people are also not getting notified when normal deletion occurs (WD:RFD). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 17:24, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for answering on behalf of User:Sjoerddebruin - something I've never come accross before on any wiki projects! And thanks for the link to the Notability policy. It says 'An item is acceptable if and only if it fulfils at least one of these two goals', not two. Why therefore do you inist on two? I now realise that when you use the term 'sitelink' you actually mean a 'Wikimedia Project' (it's there in the policy). All my reverted edits answer two criteria: they were conected to/from wmflabs.org, a 'Wikimedia Project', where their notability is clearly stated - the National Library of Wales. Secondly, they were all people, which are instances of (a) clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity... using serious and publicly available references.' You can find a list of all the reverted items on these pages - they all have the words 'Cannot auto-describe'. Many thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 18:01, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
You also say 'there weren't any incoming links on this item'. The example I gave above was linked to w:cy:Adda Fras, as all the others were too. Not to enwiki but to cywiki. Or am I missing something? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 18:24, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Well, thanks. It needs to fulfill one of the three notability rules, sorry it's very hard to describe in a other language than my main language. Like I said, Q18596116 didn't contain other content besides a label and a description. It seems like Dictionary of Welsh Biography ID (P1648) didn't get added to them. Re: the deletion of Q18720068

Wikidata:Interwiki conflicts/Unresolved/2015 /194.47.152.221 14:34, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

That's not a interwiki conflict, Q18720068 didn't contain any sitelinks. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 14:36, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
It's an interwiki conflict in the sense that it's impossible, in the present state, to unlink sv and fi from the others. And since sv and fi were already linked to Q88372 it wasn't allowed to link them to Q18720068 instead. My hope was that by creating Q18720068 and reporting an interwiki conflict I would alert an administrator with the proper rights. Maybe there is another way to solve the problem. /194.47.152.221 13:35, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Why do you think this merge was wrong? When I look at the nlwiki article it's describing the exact same thing as the other two. --TMg 15:31, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

The article on nlwiki is about a fourth-level administrative division in Indonesia (Q2225692), not a district of Indonesia (Q3700011). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:33, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Q18949010 restored

Hi! I have restored Q18949010 as it does meet the notability policy, [1] and [2] for example. See what I have added. ·addshore· talk to me! 13:57, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

I have also restored Q18648693 and Q18670304 ·addshore· talk to me! 14:27, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Also Q18918681 and Q19265091 ·addshore· talk to me! 14:56, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Will respond to them one by one:
All deletions were part of a month of unpatrolled new items from anonymous users. If no action is taken within a month, they will automatically be marked as patrolled and become somewhat untraceable. Thanks for making them notable (some weren't before you've added more information). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:22, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
I didn't make these notable, they already were. Just because an item doesn't currently contain any references does not mean it is not notable. Also it might be an idea to send the creator of the items you delete in this way again some sort of note? Cheers! ·addshore· talk to me! 15:38, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
It's clear that we have a different vision about notability. The notability should be described in the item itself. If I expand every item during patrolling, I would become a item request service. Not someone I want to be. Notifying users is something I want to do, but it's hard to disambiguate dynamic and normal IP addresses (don't want to scare the wrong people away) and there is not a clear process for that (templates, Twinkle?). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:47, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
WD:N says "The entity must be notable, in the sense that it can be described using serious and publicly available references". In all of the cases above the item can be described using references (as I have proved). WD:N says nothing about the fact that the items must contain the references in order to prove their notability, sure this makes admins life easier and probably should be done but thus notable items that don't currently have references should not be deleted. Also in some cases an items notability can be shown through multiple references but there references may not fit into the current data represented by wikidata ie. the properties that are available and thus the claims that can be made. ·addshore· talk to me! 16:34, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Removal of birth dates

Hi, please do not remove a birth date before making sure it is really an incorrect one. A statement is not necessarily more true because it comes from the GND rather than from Wikipedia. I have checked only a few, but both here and here, you removed a date that sounded plausible and left one that was clearly at odds with the death date. --Zolo (talk) 08:35, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

The first one was double, I don't think it's necessary to add "imported from" > "English Wikipedia" to the other one. The second one was a mistake from my side, sorry. *takes coffee* Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:40, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Oh dear, 1833 and 1883... Sorry, not the best task to do in the morning... Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:45, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Ok :). "imported from" does not seem very useful when the validity of the data has been checked, but when data have not been checked those "imported from" can help us making corrrections [3]. --Zolo (talk) 12:20, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Q12877584 deletion

You have deleted A Doric Portico at Athens (Q12877584). I really don't understand why. It's a print with a representation from the XVIIth century of the Doric Portico at Athens, old entrace of Agora. It's a clearly identifiable material entity, which has been described using serious and publicly available references (one of them http://www.archive.org/stream/antiqvitiesAthe1Stua#page/3/mode/1up ). Regards Shonagon (talk) 21:28, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

I don't see any serious and publicly available references in the deleted item. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 22:29, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
I really even more don't understand. 5 minutes to find 7 online academics references :
Regards. Shonagon (talk) 08:25, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Furthermore we have big projects on Wikidata about visual artworks with many people involved. Please don't curb those great projects with abusive deletions. An item of Cultural Institution's colections has always academics references and is enough for notability. Regards Shonagon (talk) 08:38, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Cool down Shonagon, don't accuse people of abusive deletions. I'm sure that now you've provided all these new references, Sjoerd will undelete the item so you can update the item and properly source it. Multichill (talk) 12:03, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Undeleted, please add references to the item itself or I will request deletion somewhere later. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 16:57, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
@Shonagon: ^^ Multichill (talk) 19:46, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very much! the item has been updated and a better image was published on Commons. Best regards Shonagon (talk) 00:14, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

About James bond

James Bond (Q844) is about book series (Q277759) and film series (Q24856). Item for the character is James Bond (Q2009573), this is why I deleted the Imdb id. --ValterVB (talk) 20:14, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, I know. Don't need to do stuff like this without food. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 20:15, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Bon appetite. :) --ValterVB (talk) 20:20, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Mbch331 (talk) 12:47, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Ant-Man

This is about extacly same thing than this. Why do you refuse to interlink them? CAJH (talk) 11:42, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

No, one of them is a Wikimedia disambiguation page (Q4167410). Those should not be merged with other topics. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 12:17, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
The Finnish version originally disambiguation page before and expanded it and changed its categories. I seems that someone needs to then do the same for the Dutch version as well. Without an official deadline, of course. CAJH (talk) 16:53, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

unknown values in occupation

Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:43, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Interessant! Unexpected Deletion of Q20046285

Why the deletion? I was importing an entity from Freebase, how is this spam/advertising? There is no promotional text or spam (of course if you don't categorize Freebase as advertising) so I don't think the deletion was right.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by EmPetkov (talk • contribs).

Please read our Freebase FAQ, your item didn't meet our notability policy. The item didn't contain any other information than the Freebase ID and had "Small and reliable StrongMove provide all services for anyone planing to move out." as description, which is clearly a text made for advertising. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:10, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
Yes, it didn't because I just started to populate the data. If you delete items few minutes after they are created, while someone is still adding data on the page - how it could be "more than the Freebase ID" and include more information?
Hn, 20 minutes could be "few minutes". I've restored it (Q20046285), please add relevant statements and references to make sure it will not be deleted again. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 16:04, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Use of "Chief Executive Officer"

HI, I've literally just started using wikidata, and I dove right in... Been making scrolling through random items just to get the hang of things. On the wikidata page for "Ralph Izzo" I was going to add that he is CEO of PSEG (public service enterprise group), but then I noticed that it was already on the page but you had taken it down. So I'm curious what happened, why take off the CEO part? Thanks  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 170.75.162.230 (talk • contribs).

Hi, the claim suggested that Public Service Enterprise Group (Q930919) was the CEO of Ralph Izzo (Q19862201). I don't know if there's a easy way to do this... Maybe you can add employer (P108) with position held (P39)chief executive officer (Q484876) as qualifier. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:33, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Staatshoofd

Beste Sjoerd,

Ceescamel (talk) 11:20, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

A couple of deletions

Currently trying to fill out the productions of this production studio, Heaven Sent Gaming (Q17275459). The two that were deleted were Q20668816 and Q20668805, the two things deleted meet WD:N, as they are "clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity" and have "some structural need". I do have a question though:

mayor of Arlon

Hallo Sjoerd,

Hey Sjoerddebruin, what was wrong with the information related to P747? Regards --Dorades (talk) 16:39, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Canvas/schildersdoek

Ceescamel (talk) 14:11, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Mbch331 (talk) 14:34, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

BNF identifier

Hi,

I think there's a problem with the script you're using to import the Bibliothèque nationale de France ID (P268) from VIAF : [4], [5], [6], [7], etc. Your script omit the last character.

Regards, Thibaut120094 (talk) 02:11, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

I don't use a script, I just copy and paste the value on VIAF. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 06:58, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
So can you copy and paste the entire value? You'll find the entire value on the URL to catalogue.bnf.fr. Otherwise the item you modify show up on Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P268#.22Format.22_violations. Thibaut120094 (talk) 15:14, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm not going to visit a extra site. A bot seems to fix it and VIAF should fix their stuff. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 15:16, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
There's no need to visit an extra site, the URL with the identifier is available here on VIAF. Thibaut120094 (talk) 15:20, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
Hi, Sjoerddebruin, you may also want to use User:Tpt/viaf.js that will import and reference the ACs much more easily :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 09:50, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Well, User:Tpt/viaf.js import the wrong identifier for NUKAT, but otherwise yes it's a great tool. Thibaut120094 (talk) 10:57, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
@Thibaut120094: oh, didn't notice for NUKAT : is it systematic ? If so, could you please explain which is the problem, so that Tpt can fix it :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:27, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Question

Hi Sjoerddebruin,

I would just want to learn how an item is determined to be spam? Can you help me understand?

Thank you

Not one thing on that item was good. Please read our instructions and our notability policy first. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 19:59, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

OK, so this does not count as what is described in the first criterion?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_of_Truth_(marketing)

I don't work for P&G, so I can't see any reason why I would want to spam/advertise for them.

Just asking?

Didn't see a sitelink in the deleted item. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 20:12, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

I'm new. Still learning.

I believe I added this as a "Reference URL". Where would be the appropriate place for this sitelink?

[AUG 27th] I guess this means that the Wikipedia/wikidata family is no longer really interested in increasing their knowledge base. And I can't really blame them (I blame Google). Perhaps it is time for a new alternative.

How can you learn what is in the world by asking users to create items by first learning this terribly difficult interface? And then you come deleting them with little to no explanation as to why one is deleted and the other is not. Why not just ask us to submit our items direct to moderators/or whatever you call them? At least that way, no one can be accused of creating spam!

FYI, that "neologism" was created by Procter & Gamble in 2004 NOT me. I learned about it all the way in Nigeria, West Africa in 2012 (through Google). If i have sinned against Wikidata by thinking that this term (which conceptualizes a more strategic and encompassing form of point-of-sale advertising) then I guess I joined the wrong community. There are many many facts and concepts here in Africa that require data representations online. Apart from myself and a few others, there are just not that many people who would have the time or drive to learn this complex wikidata interface to help furnish the web with such data; or help in verifying them.

Anyway, whatever...... I'm sure no one would respond to this anyway! :-(

Good luck with your wikis!

Hello,

I'm really sorry for this. It was caused by a "fausse manoeuvre", and quickly reported. I thought I had got all of them with Autolist, but obviously not :/

Thanks again, and will try not to do that kind of stupid error again. --Hsarrazin (talk) 09:46, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Jup, I thought that you fixed them all too. This was the only one left. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:51, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Freedom of expression

Dear Sjoerd, The day that freedom of expression is no longer welcome is nigh. Why is it that you are the one introducing it to Wikidata? GerardM (talk) 05:58, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi! I have added a constraint in that property considering that it was being used in a different way as it was intended (see the example in Property talk:P803). I noticed some of these divergent edits are yours. For instance, I have added the information included here using employer (P108) instead. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 06:45, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Right... It was a very confusing name, will fix items. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 13:48, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi! I see you have created this property, but which property proposal does it correspond to? Danrok (talk) 21:42, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

(posting on mobile) It's listed on the second page with pending properties. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 21:43, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
Looking at that and there are 3 height type proposals. Danrok (talk) 21:45, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Average speed and others

Hi Sjoerddebruin. I use length (P2043) on two infoboxes of the French Wikipedia project cycling. Does it exists a proposal for an average speed (for a cycling race for example) and another for time in hours, minutes, seconds (the time of a race, and the gap between the winner and other cyclists) ? Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 11:46, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

See Wikidata:Property proposal/Pending/2, they are not listed it seems. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 11:50, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
For the average speed, I find this proposal for speed. Discussions are interesting because it seems users wants only one property for speed, and qualifiers to be more precise. For the time, I will launch a new proposal. Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 14:10, 10 September 2015 (UTC) Wikidata:Property proposal/Event for the property.

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum@wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

wapens - vragen

Fess == Dwarsbalk

Beerta -> belangrijke gebeurtenis

Elvesham (talk) 07:32, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Nee hoor, dit mag ook gewoon. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:50, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Myiodynastes chrysocephalus

Dear Sjoerddebruin, What I wanted to do with the editions you reverted, was to correct a mistake. All the links to other Wikipedias at the page of this species in Wikispecies, are established at the nominal subspecies, which you may agree, is incorrect. This links avoid to link the full species page to the other wikis. https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Myiodynastes_chrysocephalus_chrysocephalus May be you are able to correct. Best regards --Hector Bottai (talk) 18:57, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello Sjoerd,

since you worked a little on production company (Q2051978), I thought you might be able to say if it can be merged into production company (Q11396960). From the title (productiehuis) and a cursory reading (with the little Dutch I can understand) it seems to be possible, but I'm not sure. Thanks, --S.K. (talk) 00:01, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

PoulpyBot

Hi, I'm PoulpyBot's operator. In its last batch of actions, it added quite a lot of self references. I stopped it as soon as I noticed it (i.e. not soon enough...); in the meantime, you blocked it, as expected in this situation.

I've undone every self reference. I've also corrected my dataset, checked if I was correct and double-checked it. Won't happen again, I swear. :)

I'm really sorry for this unfortunate edits. May I ask you to unblock my bot, now? – Poulpy (talk) 21:30, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Steve Goodman

Beste Sjoerd, zou jij even willen kijken naar Steve Goodman.

Deletion

On my watchlist I see you deleted Q21481877. A couple of hours ago, the logs for this page showed that I had made about a dozen contributions to this entity in mid-November, though now those logs only show your deletion. I have no way of knowing what this entity was, contesting its deletion, or learning from my mistakes. Is there any way you can tell me why you deleted it? Runner1928 (talk) 16:15, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

The item was about Far North Spirits, a microdistillery. I didn't see a clear notability, but I could be wrong. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:50, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Re: Rollback

Thanks for the information. As about almost everything in Wikidata, I didn't know about this permission. Nevertheless, I think it's still too soon for me for applying for that flag. I prefer to be very careful and conservative about manteinance. In Wikipedia I may be considered an expert: although I don't know anything about programation, I have done more than 50.000 editions. But in Wikidata I'm a newcomer, and I prefer to stay in that situation for some time. Anyway, I'll keep your message so that I can reconsider my position in the future.

Thanks for your trust and please forgive me for my terrible english. I used to be quite good writing in english, but that was 30 or 35 years ago; since then, I haven't used the language for much more than reading the lyrics and singing Pink Floyd songs.

Oh, I was forgetting about this: I simply love the word nevertheless; I find it one of most originals expressions in english.

Have a nice day, --Marcelo (talk) 16:26, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Okay then, please be sure to mark the edits you rollbacked "by hand" as patrolled. That was the first reason I wanted to contact you. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 17:10, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Joe Venuti

As explained here, and in greater detail in the enwiki page about him, there is no reliable way to know where or when Joe Venuti was actually born, because he gave different answers to everyone. Please do not restore "1903" and "Philadelphia" to that entry. DS (talk) 14:12, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi. You delete this item. Kilian Frankiny was stagiaire in one of the 17 biggest cycling team. Can you restore this item.

On cycling, we not only need item for cyclists to do the roster of a team, but in few monthes we will do classification, this means that all cyclists participating at a professionnal race will have their item. Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 10:14, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
