Wrong merges[edit]

Hi! I have noticed that in the last hours you did many merges through the Wikidata Game; I have checked some tens of them and they were wrong, so I decided to undo all of them as a precaution. Of course duplicate items are a problem on Wikidata and merging them is welcome, but wrong merges are surely a bigger problem than duplicates, because undoing them is somewhat inconvenient and they are a relevant problem for data quality. So, please, please never merge items if you aren't 100% sure of the need of merging them; I would also suggest to avoid the merge task in the Wikidata Game. If you have any question, please ask me. I am very sorry for that. I went through the basic instructions for merging two Wikidata items, so I thought I could apply that knowledge there. Hi sir!

Thanks for your correction. Not all words can be traslated. Some words are very confussing unless you put them in a sentence. FOR example ,karimba- male teacher, karimba- suck them, karimba- meaning a father of Karim. I have no option then to white with the English word for the understanding of majority. @Koavf: I would just like to jump in and clarify a point you have raised. All languages adopt words from other languages. For English we have hospital (French), curry (Hindi), ninja (Japanese) and thousands more. Dagbani is a relatively small language with an estimate of less than 4 million speakers today. Small languages have a greater tendency to adopt loan words from more widely used languages the users come into contact with. Unless you are a speaker of Dagbani, you shouldn't be instructing a native speaker on how their language works. I have checked a few of the labels added by Achiri Bitamsimli and Dagbani language resources online have confirmed they match the items where they are placed. I would strongly encourage you to assume good faith here and leave it to other Dagbani speakers to resolve how many loan words are used in Dagbani labels. @Koavf: I don't know, as I am not a native speaker. However, if you look at how other small languages behave, it wouldn't surprise me. For example, listen to any modern radio or television programme in Welsh and count how long it takes for an untransliterrated English word to pop up in the dialogue. I'd be surprised if you could go for 3 minutes without hearing one. The key point here is that as non-native speakers we should not be making judgements about a language we do not know. Concerns were raised earlier about the Dagbani labels; these concerns were investigated and revealed to be unfounded. Our requirement for assume good faith means that we should not keep pestering the user with unsubtantiated claims. If you think there is an issue with how Dagbani works, learn Dagbani or find a native Dagbani speaker to clarify the point. From Hill To Shore (talk) 06:39, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Koavf: English (Q1860), Welsh (Q9309) and Dagbani (Q32238) are all writen using Latin script (Q8229), so I have no idea what your last point there is trying to make. The key question is whether you are going to pursue this matter with Achiri Bitamsimli and do you have any evidence to support your concerns beyond a vague unease from not understanding the language? Situation resolved[edit]

Hi. I wanted to leave this message to confirm that the situation with your batch edits has been checked and the consensus of editors is that you have done nothing wrong.[1] The situation was caused by another user making a mistake with an online translation tool when they checked the meaning of the Dagbani labels you were inserting. The tool was not designed to work with the Dagbani language and the supposed "translations" it provided appeared to be labels that a vandal would add. We are now satisfied that the original report was a mistake and you can resume your batch edits to add Dagbani labels using Quick Statements. A large amount of your previous edits have been reverted, so you may want to create replacement batches to reinsert those missing labels.

Hi User:Achiri Bitamsimli, I just saw that you added a description to a South African singer/songwriter/actor's profile: "South Africa karimba ŋun nyɛ doo". What does this mean in English and why is it different from a previously added description in dagbani saying "South Africa kpiɛrikpiɛrita ŋun nyɛ doo" which was added by User:Din-nani1. Do those have the same meaning, and if not, what is it? Just trying to figure this out as I cant't find a translation tool for this language. Any clarification would be much appreciated. @Awellmann: "South Africa karimba ŋun nyɛ doo" means "South Africa male teacher" and "South Africa kpiɛrikpiɛrita ŋun nyɛ doo" means "South Africa male artist(actor)". I am beginning to realise that some of these issues result in the items that are gotten after a query is ran. For example we can have the same item(name) appearing in different queries that are ran. When that happens the English description of that person might not match with the Dagbani description that is used in the batch uploads. Like, I run a query on "South Africa male teachers" then David Agnes name appears as part of this batch. Then a different person runs query on "South Africa male artist" and the same appears in that batch as well.
