@JakobVoss:

Unfortunately http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/nomenclatures/index.cfm?TargetUrl=LST_NOM_DTL&StrNom=NACE_REV2&StrLanguageCode=EN does not support linking to search results (it uses a HTTP POST). It's problematic not being able to click on a value and get to the classification for verification. Is there any other copy of NACE to link to? -- JakobVoss (talk) 20:49, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

NACE version[edit]

NACE code rev.2 (P4496) has Wikidata item of this property (P1629) Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community, Rev. 2 (2008) (Q732298), but the latter refers to editions (1, ) 1.1 and 2.0. --AVRS (talk) 19:59, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

added Constraints, please help to work out WD Industry hierarchy[edit]

I've added Unique values, Single-value and Format constraints to "NACE code".

  • Until the "constraint exceptions" pages are populated, you can check them from the "SPARQL" links above.
  • For Format Violations, use this simpler query
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?value WHERE {
  ?item wdt:P4496 ?value
  filter(!REGEX(STR(?value), "^([A-Z]|\\d{2}|\\d{2}\\.\\d|\\d{2}\\.\\d{2})$" ))
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en,no,nn,nb,fr,de" } .
} order by ?value
Try it!
  • The NACE hierarchy is an excellent way to organize and flesh out the WD Industry hierarchy
  • This query finds all WD items used as "industry" and returns their NACE and SIC codes:
select ?ind ?indLabel ?sic ?nace ?c {
  {select ?ind (count(*) as ?c) {?x wdt:P452 ?ind} group by ?ind}
  optional {?ind wdt:P3242 ?sic}
  optional {?ind wdt:P3242 ?nace}
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en,de,fr,it,ru,nn,no,nl,ja" }
} order by desc(?c)
Try it!

Need your help to check Wikidata industries against the NACE classification! --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 15:04, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

constraint "NOT instance of Organization or subclass"[edit]

This prop already has "type constraint; relation: instance of; class: economic activity".

But people still attach it to specific organizations rather than industries.

So how can I add a constraint "NOT instance of Organization or a subclass thereof"? I tried two ways but it complains (in red above):

  • conflicts-with constraint; relation: instance or subclass of; item of property constraint: organization
  • conflicts-with constraint; relation: instance or subclass of; class: organization

It works with:

  • conflicts-with constraint; property: instance of; item of property constraint: organization

But:

  • Only direct instances of "organization" are checked, as per this query, 105 results (after removing LIMIT 100)
  • If I add the usual P279*, this query returns 225 results (times out sometimes)

@Jura1: is there a way to include "or subclass of" in a "conflicts-with constraint"? --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 08:59, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merge singleton classes with their subclasses[edit]

https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AQ112122645#merge_to_plant_propagation_(Q29584389)

This also means that "single value" constraint should be removed.

@Arpyia: do you agree? Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:31, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Merge "n.e.c" classes to parent class[edit]

Consider this part of the hierarchy:

S96 - Other personal service activities
S96.0 - Other personal service activities
S96.0.1 - Washing and (dry-)cleaning of textile and fur products
S96.0.2 - Hairdressing and other beauty treatment
S96.0.3 - Funeral and related activities
S96.0.4 - Physical well-being activities
S96.0.9 - Other personal service activities n.e.c.

(This is from a display version of NACE that includes the letter. The "official NACE code of eg S96.0.9 is "96.09")

The previous section asks to merge S96 with S96.0 because it means the same thing (S96 has a singleton child).

I'd also like to propose to merge S96.0.9 to the same node S96: i.e. merge "foo n.e.c." (not elsewhere classified) to "foo". I think that the distinction between "foo" and "foo n.e.c." is not significant for WD and is not appropriate for an encyclopedic knowledge graph like WD.

@Arpyia: what do you think? Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:39, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

formatter URL[edit]

I added this formatter URL:

https://showvoc.op.europa.eu/#/datasets/ESTAT_Statistical_Classification_of_Economic_Activities_in_the_European_Community_Rev._2.1._%28NACE_2.1%29/data?resId=http:%2F%2Fdata.europa.eu%2Fux2%2Fnace2.1%2F$1

For example, 01.11 Growing of cereals, other than rice, leguminous crops and oil seeds

However, we need an extra feature in Wikidata External ID redirector (Q108047563): remove the dot in the middle, i.e. from "01.11" to "0111".

change to externalId[edit]

ArthurPSmith (talkcontribslogs) wrote in https://github.com/arthurpsmith/wikidata-tools/issues/32: "won't work because the property datatype is set to "string". Formatter URL's are only used for External ID data types". Can a property creator please change P4496 to "externalID" ? --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 13:38, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata:Property_proposal/NACE_code says "it's a classification code, so the same code may be applied to many different wikidata items. String datatype is correct.".--GZWDer (talk) 15:48, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As you can see at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P4496#P2302:
So I don't think the quote is correct. It is by @ArthurPSmith: can you comment? -- Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 07:07, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me to change the datatype to external ID then. ArthurPSmith (talk) 11:08, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
